The US Open starts this week and we’re all about tennis! Of course, since we love jewelry, we can’t help thinking about tennis bracelets. The tennis bracelet is known as a flexible bracelet with diamonds (usually of the same size) set closely together, one after the other, in a line all the way around the wrist. Tennis bracelets come in all shapes and sizes and while primarily known as a diamond bracelet, other gemstones are often used in this design.
Ever wonder where the term tennis bracelet came from? It dates back to a US Open match in 1987 and tennis star Chris Evert. Evert is widely believed to be the first woman to wear diamonds on the court. While playing her match, the clasp of her diamond line bracelet broke open and fell off her wrist. She then asked officials to stop the match until the bracelet was found. Since that time, the diamond line bracelet has been referred to as a tennis bracelet and has become an essential piece of jewelry to wear daily.
